BOOK OF THE WEEK
THE SCHLUMPH OBSESSION By Denis Jenkinson & Peter Verstappen. 1978 189 large pages The torrid story of the famous French car collection, which was amassed on an amazingly grand scale , in secret, by textile millionair-brothers between the 50s to the 70s. Having aquired a significant percentage of all the Bugattis in existance, purchaced the spares from the Bugatti factory when it closed and added hundreds of exotic road and racing cars(including a couple of 1930s 'Silver Arrows' Mercedes, a Lotus 25 and a Ferrari 312B) , the brothers ran into "trouble with the authorities" and fled to exile in nearby Switzerland. The whole collection was taken over by the French Government , with the help of the enraged local labour unions, and a long legal battle began over ownership (only recently cocnluded long after noth brothers had died). This book fell pray to the legal manouverings and there are stories that some were removed from the shelves by court order shortly after printing! As a result this book remained somewhat rare for many years. Time has moved on and the story has less impact today than when the collection was first 'uncovered', to gasps of awe, and the prices have fallen to quite sensible levels. It's a superb book, the text is by the famous 'Jenks' of MOTOR SPORT fame and the photos by Geoff Goddard reveal the collection in as-found condition which only adds to the mystique.
Nice example. fine apart from minor wear to the top of the spine on the jacket. Price £20.00
