Wonderfully atmpspheric shot, belived to be from the F2 race at Winfield in Scotland on July 21 1951 - the day of the one and only Scottish Grand Prix, no less.Although the car's number doesn't match the entry list for this race printed in RECORD OF GRAND PRIX AND VOITURETTE RACING for this particular year, it possibly also ran in one of the supporting races with a different number? Any ideas anyone?
This is the rare and evocative Ferrari 166 V12 2 litre F2 car of David Murray (of Ecurie Ecosse fame).being scrutineered in a gloriously makeshift tent. Stood in white overalls is the legendary mechanic and pre-war race driver Wilkie Wilkinson who was the mechanic for the car and later for Ecurie Ecosse when they won Le Mans.
David Murray and Bill Dobson, raced this car under the SCUDERIA AMBROSIANA banner before Ecurie Ecosse was set up . The car itself was, apparently, bought from Peter Whithead and has never been seen since... does it still exist in a barn somewhere perhaps?
Lovely period details such as the attire of the scrutineers and that wonderful looking engine...
Lovely shot recently printed up from an original 35mm negative held in our archives.
