Really nice atmospheric photo of the HWM of Stirling Moss in the paddock at Goodwood on Sept 30 1950.
The young Strling Moss raced for HWM in 1950 and 1951 in F2 races all over europe , an era that did much to establish him as the most promising young driver of his generation. Other HWM drivers of the time included George Abecassis, Duncan Hamilton , Peter Collins and Lance Macklin (we have photos of all three in HWMs on our eBay store).
On the day this photo was taken Moss raced in the GOODWOOD TROPHY a race for F1 and F2 cars and finished top F2 in 7th with the race overall BRM V16 of Reg Parnell (we have a photo of the car on that day on our eBay store) from Bira's Maserati and Gerard's ERA.Nice period touches in the photo include the attire of the people around the car and the road cars parked in the background including a Ford V8 Pilot and a Moris Minor. The figure on the left with a cigarette in his mouth is, I think, the legendary mechanic Alf Francis - although please correct me if I am wrong.Moss of course went on to Grand Prix superstardom and raced for the Maserati, Mercedes, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Cooper, BRM, Lotus and OSCA teams winning 16 GPs and hundreds of other races untill his career-ending accident, also at Goodwood in 1962.
