Wonderfully atmpspheric shot from the 1952 Silverstone British GP event featuring future world F1 champion (1958) Mike Hawthorn sat in his famous Cooper-Bristol The car that he raced with such style in Grands Prix during the season that Ferrari signed him up as a team driver in 1953.

In this shot the car is being tinkered with on the pit apron during practice with Hawthorn's supportive father Leslie on the far right apparently adjusting an early on-board film camera which Nike was trying out at this event (wonder where the film went to???) The figure closest to the photographer could be the famous mechanic Brit Pearce.

In the background the Silverstone circuit is devoid of spectators and you can see the earth banks that kept the cars out of the crowds and the loud speakers. On the right is the tail of Alan Brown's Cooper Bristol.
