1996 Biography of the British driver who was a major player in the sport before-during-and after the war for various reasons - after his initial foray in 1934 he had his race licence withdrawn in 1937 after an accident involving & seriously injuring lady race-driver Kay Petre. He got his licence back in time for the '39 season which of course came to a premature end, courtesy of 'Adolf'. Like many others his potentially most effective years as a driver were lost. His application to join the RAF was turned down, as he was told he would be of more use with his transport experience, organising vehicle movements! This he did with aplomb and in the meantime seemed to acquire/take-in most of the serious racing cars(including several ERAs ) that were 'laying around' at the time in danger of being bombed, and store them safely at his Derbyshire farm : come the peace he had his pick of what was there and returned or sold on the others at a handsome profit . In the early post-war years he become Britains leading driver, raced for the Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin and BRM works teams, won a lot of races formed his own team and ran In F1 but Sadly this human dynamo died in 1962 age 53 after a very short illness. 208 pages inc many photos.
